Other Mansions in Newport Area?

We will be visiting Newport soon and know about "The Mansions" and they are definitely on our list to see. However we've also stumbled across sites for Doris Duke's Rough Point and also Blithewold in Bristol. Are there any other homes that are open for tours that are not associated with "The Mansions"?

There is also the Museum of Illustration in Newport which was a Newport mansion, and several building on the Salve campus in Newport were also at the level of 'mansions'.

In Newport, some mansions that were not part of the Newport Mansions group were Belcourt and Astors Beechwood.

Belcourt had been in one family for years and the widow who owned it allowed some tours, but also rents the place out for events. The website is down so mavbe she finally sold the palce

Beechwood was a little different and gimicky. The tour was conducted by actors posing as household staff Looks like that place was sold too and is no longer open to the public

Rough Point which you mentioned is very worth the visit. Doris Duke was an interesting woman.

Blithewold is a favorite of mine but it's out of the way, and less of a mansion, more house and garden. If you do go up to Bristol, also check out Linden Place.(but they close for weddings a lot during the summer, so check before you go)

It's much less expensive to go to the mansions in the Newport Mansions portfolio since they have combination tickets. The Breakers is a must, no competition. If you get a 2 or 5 house combinaton pass (which never expires, by the way, so you can use it on future trips) you can pick Marble House. Elms or some of the smaller houses.

BTW between Xmas and New Years, a few privately owned smaller historic houses in town (from the colonial era and onwards) are part of an open house tour. It's worth walking that historic neighborhood, maybe with a guided tour , at any time of the year
