Advice on getting from NYC to Newport to Martha's VY

We are thinking of taking Amtrak from Penn Station to Kingston, then on to Newport for first night, then to Martha's vineyard for 2 nts, then fly back to JFK. I'd be grateful for advice on whether this will be easy or a big hassle as to how we'd get from one place to the other.

Main questions are:

1. best way to get from Amtrak Kingston train station to Newport? (would be a sunday in June)?

2. do we need a car in Newport? Are hire cars available in Kingston or Newport? We just want to see all the mansions. Is two half days enough time?

3. best way to get from Newport to Martha's VY?

4. Has anyone used Delta to fly Marth's VY to JFK? Is it reliable?

The best way to get from Kingston to Newport would be a taxi. You do not neccessarily need a car in Newport, it is a walkable city; just make sure you stay in the vicinity of America's Cup Ave. To get to MV, I would get a taxi to Quonset Point in North Kingstown and take the high speed ferry. I have never flown out of the vineyard but flights do get delayed cancelled depending on fog.

Kingston to Newport is a good 30 minute ride, maybe more depending on traffic in Newport. Might be pretty expensive

There is a bus from Kingstown to Newport, but it only runs about 5 times per day, no service on Sunday. See ripta.com for more info and fares, but it's going to be far cheaper than a taxi. Also you would need to arrange for a taxi to meet you at the station. You shouldn't assume there will be one there.

Another option is to fly into PVD airport. There are shuttle services available to Newport from there, or taxis or also RIPTA buses.

Newport has a lot to offer besides the mansions. Ocean Drive is spectacular. You might consider taking a tour if you don't have a car. Tours typically include a mansion or two, Ocean Drive and a look at Colonial Newport. Bannister and Bowen's Wharf is another stop you shouldn't miss. Lots of shops and restaurants and mega yatchs to gawk at.

I agree taking the high speed ferry from Quonset is the best way to get to MV.
