Mansion advice

Hello...

We are traveling to newport in late may and were wondering what combination of mansions/tours people would recommend. We're not super into gardens etc. so we don't want any highly specialized tours. Thanks!

You can go to Gateway Viaitors Center, where the buses are, and they have guided tours going from there. There are different packages available. The Breakers Mansion is the supreme one and a must see.

The visitors center is a great place to start. There are several mansions to tour, and how many you see should depend on how much time you have. As the previous poster said, the Breakers is a must see. If you only have a day, I would plan on touring no more than 3 houses. We did a day trip from Mystic and saw the Breakers, Marble House, and the Elms, and the time allotted was comfortable. These three homes do offer some specialized tours, but they cost additional money, and I feel the basic tours are enough to give you some history. If you have more than a day, you can add some of the other homes (Chateau Sur Mer, Rosecliff, and some of the smaller homes). Don't miss taking the cliff walk, a beautiful walk along the ocean.

Yes, if I had to pick just one mansion, I'd go see the Breakers. For something a little different, Astor's Beechwood is fun because the tour is conducted by folks playing the parts of the Astor's servants. You should also check out newportmansions.org for more info.

Another vote for the Breakers...*I* would also like to see Rough Point-Doris Duke's home, personally. It is only open seasonally however.

Yes Doris Dukes mansion has the most beautiful interior of them all in my opinion and most of it is as she left it. Her bedroom is unbelievable beautiful. Well worth the extra cost. The Marble House and Rosecliff are also really nice.
