Flagstaff with teenagers

Hi

We are a family from the UK planning a three week road trip in the South West in summer 2014 with our two sons, who will be 13 and 15. We are planning on mixing some of the national parks, including Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite, with some cities, including San Francisco and San Diego.

We are starting at Las Vegas and heading straight to the Grand Canyon from there. We're wondering whether Flagstaff might be a good place for an overnight stop between GCNP and a visit to Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell. We always enjoy visiting new cities, and Flagstaff sounds great from the guide books I've read. We're usually happy to just wander around, finding nice places to eat, drink and browse around, but if there are places we should definitely visit (or avoid!), we'd love to hear about them!

Any help gratefully received...

Many thanks

Flagstaff is definitely a cool city. It's a college town so there is an abundance of young people and culture. It's an historic town with lots of attractions for those who are interested in how it evolved from ancient Indians to western settlements, railroad and Route 66.

However, it's not really between GCNP and Page. It would be a detour of sorts but worthwhile if you have a couple of nights to spare in your journey.

I would also advise that you not miss nearby Sedona.

Thanks for your reply. I'm quite happy with the detour - the boys are looking forward to the parks but having a night or two between them in a nice town seems ideal to us. And Flagstaff sounds great!

Sedona also looks good. How long would you recommend we need there?

People who visit Sedona and stay for less than 3 days usually regret not planning more time there.

Great thanks. I'll certainly check it out. So many great places to see, so little time...
