Public Transportation on island?

We will be camping at Starrigavan for 5 days mid-July 2010. What are the transportation options to town and other attractions on the island without moving the RV?

The visitor sites in Sitka are mostly in the downtown area and are walkable, from the Raptor Center and Totem Park to the historical sites. Unfortunately, your campsite is about seven miles from all the action. Sitka is a busy town for cab companies, which will charge you about $10 each way to come and go from town. The Sitka Tribe does run a Community Ride bus M-F from 6:30am-6:30pm and looking at a map, it seems Crescent Harbor is the furthest stop from town. I am not quite sure how far that is from your campground. Look at publictransit,sitkatribe.org for more. You are about 3/4 of a mile from the ferry terminal and when the ferry is in, you can catch a bus ride to town for $5 or $7 round-trip. Sitka. Airport Shuttle

provides transportation to the downtown area or to accommodations May - Sept., $5 one way, $7 round-trip. For information, call Sitka Tours at (907) 747-8443. Call Sitka Tours at 907-747-8443 to learn more. Beware, they may not answer the phone in the "off-season." The visitor season here is May-September. If you do chose to drive downtown, the Harrigan Hall parking lot will be your best bet for parking or the Sheldon Jackson campus, which are about 1/2 mile apart and border either end of downtown.

There is a Borough Bus stop outside of the Ward Lake area, unfortunately, the walk along the access road into the lake is several miles and that's where the campsites are. A cab to and from the main Ward Lake parking lot are your best bets. If you do decide to drive to town, I caution you that the streets are very, very tight. Stay on the main drag "Tongass Ave" only and park at the Discovery Center lot. Another option is to park at the spacious Wal-Mart lot which is about two miles from Ward Lake and take the Borough Bus to and from that location to downtown or Totem Bight sightseeing. The schedule should be somewhere on the Ketchikan Gateway Borough website or check with the public library...to complex (three lines) to type here. The bus runs about every 30 minutes from Wal-Mart and even better there is a free "Wal-Mart Shuttle" for cruise ship passengers and crew which I doubt will ask you for ID.

The blue bus to Walmart is once/hour, in each direction, with two "stops" there. The Walmart van is very difficult to get and it's always loaded.

Thank you both! This kind of detailed info is so valuable. I am also interested in hikes I can do from the Ward Lake and Starrigavan campgrounds.

You can get hiking maps at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center downtown which is run by the Forest Service...I think that's the name of the building these days...same building, but the name keeps changing LOL!. The main hiking trails out of Ward Lake are very well marked with prominent signage. You could ask just about anyone in the Ward Lake area for the location of the different trail heads. Other trails around town are more challenging to find, but most any local will be able to help you out in identifying them or ask at the library.
