Suggestions for what to do the week of Thanksgiving

We will be coming to Santa Fe (staying in a house) during the week of Thanksgiving. From Sat. to Sat. Arriving from Florida. 2 Adults and 1 son - age 12. My son likes the outdoors and activities. We'll have to pull him into a few art galleries etc.

Can I get some suggestions on what to see and do in and around Santa Fe. We will have a rental car so a day trip or a couple of 1/2 day trips would be great also.

Will skiing be in swing by Nov. 26th? Or will the conditions be poor? Sledding? Hiking? Tours?

We're open for any suggestions.

Skiing is usually not an option until later in the year. Lower-elevation hikes are great for kids; the Dale Ball Trails and Audubon Center and trails are all within the city limits. There's also Bandalier, Tent Rocks, Rio Grande River - just skipping stones and lunch at Embudo Station can be a delight. Kids and parents all love the Folk Art Museum, and the Children's Museum. Art Studio tours outside the city combine beautiful drives, art, goodies, and often places to explore in the countryside. Only one hour from Santa Fe is the town of Pecos, with an archeological site, and then you can go from there to the Pecos Wilderness area and hike or take a horseback trip.

One of the best local activities for thanksgiving week occurs on Friday night at the Plaza... when the city turns on the xmas lights for the first time. Lots of kids and teenagers, Santa shows up with several helpers (good for a laugh!), music on the stage, etc. It's actually pretty fun. If you plan for dinner downtown (say at rooftop pizza - good for kids) then check out the plaza, it's a fun evening.
