Day Trip Pecos - Las Vegas - Mora Valley

For a day trip from Santa Fe, is Las Vegas NM worth a visit? I.e. in combination with Pecos National Hist. Park? And if so, is it worthwhile to complete the loop through the Mora Valley? Is it scenic? This loop does not seem to show up in any guidebooks.

Yes, this is a wonderful trip. Pecos NHP is one of my favorites. When in Las Vegas, see the Plaza area, have lunch at the Plaza Hotel. http://plazahotel-nm.com/ Also on the eastern side of town is the old La Castaneda Hotel an old Harvey House. harveyhouses.net/states/…nmhouses.html

If you have time you can drive up to Watrous on I25 to see Fort Union Nat Mon. http://www.nps.gov/foun/index.htm

Up towards Mora is Salmon Raspberry Ranch, a you pick your own. Mora area is beautiful! http://www.moravalley.com/

Have fun!

Another option for eating in Las Vegas is Charlies Spic and Span. Charlies has the best sopapillas in New Mexico as well as a great bakery.

It is a beautiful drive and a very long one. Not a ton of places to stop but great scenery.

Watch the movie Wild Hogs. Alot of the movie was filmed along this very circle.

When are you coming? Las Vegas is great if there is something going on

(like Fiesta- July4th weekend or People Faire -Aug) but otherwise its a little sleepy. Great historic mansions. The first weekend in August there is a house tour worth doing called Places with a past...

Let me make another suggestion:

Do Pecos National Monumet

then

Take 25 North to Ribera , Exit 323

On NM Route 3, 1.5 miles south, just past the railroad tracks on the right.

There is a whole in the wall (in the best sense of the word) cafe called La Risa. Great food (closed Mon,Tues, Wed)

thelarisacafe.com/TheLaRisaCafe.com/Home.html

Then continue on Route 3 South to

Maidson Vineyards

If you still have energy, you can continue to Villanueva State Park

www.emnrd.state.nm.us/prd/villanueva.htm

I love the hiking trail up over the mesa. Talk about great views...

After that , you can continue I25 North to Las Vegas or return to Santa Fe.

Thank you all for the advice.

We will be in the Santa Fe area for 8 days at the end of September so far scheduled as follows:

Flying in to Santa Fe on Friday afternoon. Booked the first night in La Fonda. Pick up the rental car on Saturday and plan to spend that day around the Plaza. The other nights are booked in Pojaque (Homewood Suites). Sunday to a church service and maybe for a hike somewhere. Plan to spend another day at Museum Hill and Canyon Road. Then a day for Taos, Toas Pueblo, high road and Chimayo. A day for Bandelier and maybe one of the Pueblos. A day for El Rancho de las Golondrinas and Santa Fe Railyard and maybe a bit more at the Plaza. That leaves one day for another trip. That`s where we were thinking of Las Vegas.

If in addition to Bandelier we have to choose between the Puye Cliff Dwellings and Pecos National Historic Park, which is more interesting to visit?

Thanks
