Is a car necessary in Friday Harbour?

I plan to spend the night in Friday Harbour, mostly for a whale watching trip. Is a car necessary? I thought it might be more expedient to leave the car in the ferry parking lot so we could get on the ferry quicker. Also, are there any ferries that leave Friday Harbour to Victoria for a day trip?

Thanks for any and all advice.

It's perfectly reasonable.

Have a good visit,

For just an overnight, and if you're mainly there to go whale watching, a car isn't necessary. But if you want to see more of the island, then you'd want a car (or at least to rent a moped).

Not sure about day trips--try the Victoria Express ferry website to see if they are running them this year.
