What restaurants to do recommend in Salem? Any unique, fun or interesting restaurants.

One thing Salem is great for is a variety of restaurants.

My three favorites are 1) Asahi - authentic Japanese and they have a hibachi grill and do tricks and stuff which kids love, 2) Bankok Paradise - Thai food and, 3) Passage to India - simply awesome Indian food.

But there is so much more. Front st and Gulu Gulu cafes are more laidback, there are some expensive places, some cheap places - really a bit of everything. If you're in a rush I like Boston Hotdog Co., especially because they have vegetarian hot dogs.

Salem is lacking a really fun theme restaurant though. As cheesy as that might be, tourists always ask for one.

For super casual ... consider a trip to Salem Willows for a Chop Suey Sandwich. It's strictly take out and there's a few picnic talbes around (suggest you "invest" in a cheap disposable tablecloth or bring a towel to cover the table.

Also available from various food stands there: pizza, hotdogs, fried clams, ice cream and the world's best popcorn.

There's also Red's Sandwich Shop, which is housed in a building that was used during the American Revolution.

There used to be a fun themed restaurant, years ago, called the Crypt Cafe...unfortunately, themed restaurants aren't what most of the locals want, and a restaurant doesn't live by tourist dollar alone. Shame, their food actually was pretty good.

If you are visitng around Halloween, Rockafella's is fun because lots of the really extreme costumed folk dine there. Otherwise, give their food a pass. Victoria Station is really nice NE style seafood with a harbor view.
