salem weather and ferry to salem from boston

I have 2 questions:

First: I will be traveling to Salem during the last week of September and I was thinking of taking the Salem Ferry from Boston as I will be flying into Logan from Philadelphia. Is this a reliable way of getting to Salem in the fall.

Second, what is the usual weather conditions in the early fall? Will a light jacket and light layers be good enough to keep me confortable?

Thanks for any help.

Yes and yes. As a backup, you have the commuter rail and Macy's :>)

msquirt: Don't forget something light...it's often absolutely perfect here in late September and sometimes even hot. The Salem Ferry runs through 31 October this year; go to salemferry.com for fares and schedules. Assuming you don't have a ton of luggage (that can be a pain on the subway), take the MBTA "Blue Line" from Logan TOWARDS Boston to the New England Aquarium stop to board the ferry.
