Saguaro NP East /West or Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Hi, we will travel through Arizona in September and we want to stay in Tucson one or two nights. We would like to visit a desert so we thought about going to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Is it worth to go all the long way to Organ Pipe National Monument or would it be better to stay at Saguaro NP? Which part of Saguaro is more interesting? How long is the drive from Tucson to Organ Pipe NM and are there any motels near this park where we could stay for a night? Thanks for your help!

Thank you so much for these great advices! It really seems that two days are not enough to visit Tucson. We will try to see as much as possible and come back another time ;-)

For an interesting view of Tucson's history, visit the Presidio museum on North Church St. It is a small replica of the original Spanish fort built in the same area at the founding of Spanish Tucson with a lot of interpretive history.

As a side note, the name Tucson came from the name of a native village across the river from the Mexican settlement at the time, which was called Chuk-Sohn. The area had been continually inhabited by various prehistoric civilizations for at least 5000 year. A thousand years ago, the Tucson valley may have been home to 50-100,00 people. By the time of the arrival of the Spanish in the late 1600's there was only a small village at the foot of what is now called A Mountain on the west side of the Santa Cruz River. The influx of the Apache people had driven other people into the western desert.

Thank you Bob for the historical background -WOW! It is incredible how many information I get in this forum. Honestly we did not know that there is so much to see in and around Tucson. We have changed our plans already and will stay two nights in Tucson and therefore cancel Organ Pipe National Monument. As you are all so helpful I have one more question - which hotel/motel would you suggest? We want to stay near Saguaro NP (Gates Pass) or Sabrino Canyon and it would be perfect if there are restaurants (steakhouse,...) nearby.

The Embassy Suites on Broadway, suggested by joeman#1, would be a great choice for something pretty central. Easy to get to Sabino Canyon and Saguaro National Park East from there.

Being in a central location, you should just stay there for two nights because there isn't much close to SNP west, other than Cat Mountain Lodge. But that isn't close to any good eateries.

Good restaurants fairly close to the Embassy Suites:

Pueblo Grill

McMahon's Steakhouse (fairly pricey)

A little further, Pinnacle Peak and El Corral for steakhouses.

Unfortunately the Embassy Suites have difficulties with their booking site and it is not bookable any more through "choose a room". As we live in Austria it would be too expensive to call. Well, I will try it late, maybe the difficulties are fixed than. Thanks again to everybody!
