7-8 hrs. adequate time to drive Trail Ridge w/ 5:10 flight?

We will be overnighting in Boulder, have a meeting in the morning until 9 A.M and fly out of DEN at 5:10. Would we have time to drive Trail Ridge and make it back in time for our flight? If not, any other ideas for scenic drives and wildlife. Thanks

Have some more coffee, hatchpal. In reply #7, they took advice from Babalax and me and decided against the drive through RMNP. We are now talking about the Mount Evans Scenic Byway and part of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway.

So Babalax and fv1989, what do you think about the route I had mentioned in #7. I will be staying in the Tech Center area right off of 470 as this is 2 miles from my 6:30 a.m. meeting.

This is the route I was thinking of: http://mapq.st/157nPoA or possibly http://mapq.st/14sZCgM

Do you think this would be a good way to spend our day or do you have another suggestion? Thanks so much for your help!

Looks good, a very nice scenic drive. You'll see the Red Rock formations west of C-470 which are very pretty. Personally I'd choose the first route and stay on I-70. I am not a "fan" of US 6 with the potential for rock slides, the casino traffic and gravel trucks. But that's just me.

I would make one change to your first option.

You may need a Plan B. Back in reply #4, note I said the Mount Evans Scenic Byway should be open to Summit Lake weather permitting. Last year, they closed the section of the byway between Echo Lake and Summit Lake for the season on September 26 due to snow. As I said in reply #5, check www.cotrip.org for the status of highway 5/Mount Evans Road. If by chance, the road is closed above Echo Lake, then I would drive this alternate route.

Our trip to Denver is still a couple of weeks away, but we have been watching the horrible flooding that has taken place in the Boulder area. Do you think that your proposed route is far enough away from the affected areas? Should we make other plans? I'm am so sorry about all the horrible things that have happened to so many people-it truly is heart breaking.

Evergreen has had flooding but you're still 2 weeks out?

You won't see the red rock formations from C-470- you'd have to take the road from I-70 that goes past Red Rocks (CO 93?) and through Morrison and then to C-470, I think.

The current weather pattern is supposed to change next week. Historically, September is one of the driest months in Colorado with most places averaging less than 2 inches of precipitation in the entire month. You should be fine by the time of your visit taking the route in either reply #14 or #15. You can check road conditions at www.cotrip.org closer to your trip.

What is the status for visitors with reservations? They won't be allowed in next week I imagine. After that?

sjde, the OP is not staying in Boulder or Estes Park and is not traveling to those areas. They are going to be at the Tech Center.

If you are asking me about when officials will permit visitors to Estes Park, I do not know. When officials feel the town is safe and can provide necessary services to both residents and guests, I am sure they will let us know. The next Estes Park town meeting is tomorrow at 10:00 am. I will not be available to post a summary of that meeting as I have done the last 2 days.
