Scenic route advice please

Can someone please offer a suggestion on the most scenic route from Denver to Estes Park? Our flight arrives at 7am and lodging check-in is after 3 so we’ll have plenty of time.

We do plan on grabbing some breakfast after leaving the airport and then going to the Denver Zoo for a few hours….any suggestions on yummy breakfast joints between the airport and the zoo would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone that offers such wonderful advice on this forum, it has really helped me plan our first Colorado vacation.

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

I like what is called the Peak to Peak Highway. There are a couple of ways for you to get to it - one is through Denver and Golden and the other up to Boulder and then up Boulder Canyon to Nederland. It's a beautiful drive either way. Here is a link to a map www.coloradodirectory.com/maps/peak.html

Less than 2 miles from the zoo is one of our favorite breakfast places called Hot Cakes. It's on E 18th at Humboldt, across from St. Joseph Hospital. It's on the west side of the zoo so not in between the airport & the zoo per se, but sure close enough and very easy to get to from 23rd which is the street the zoo is on. Kid friendly, good food.

If you drive up Boulder Canyon, make a quick stop at Boulder Falls. Also along Hwy 72 on the way to Estes Park is Brainard Lake, just outside of Ward. Very nice drive around this high mountain lake and some nice hikes as well. Great spot for picnics.

Enjoy

In the small business district out by the airport there is a wonderful retro restaurant call Moonlight Diner. It is a neat looking diner designed like the old diners in the 1950s. Lots of chrome on the outside of the building. It was very easy to get to, it is on the same street as all the hotels and other restaurants. It would be very handy for breakfast before driving to Denver.

Seems like they were open 24-hrs, but you might call to check.

6250 Tower Rd, Denver, CO, Tel: (303) 307-1750.

There are also many other national chain restaurants on this same road.

We enjoy the Peak-to-Peak drive by going the route through Boulder then to Nederland. It is a beautiful drive. It also gives you a nice view of Estes Park as you come into town.

FYI: The section between Denver/Golden and Central City/Blackhawk is sometimes conjested by tour buses taking old people to the Indian Casinos in Central City/Blackhawk. Once the casinos went in, this area lost its charm.

Thank's for all the suggestions on routes to Estes and the adive on breakfast stops. Sounds like the Peak to Peak is the route to take and with some luck, mother nature will provide us with perfect weather to compliment such a beautiful setting.

Thanks again,
