Drive through RMNP with a 30ft rv

We(husband, parents, and three toddlers) are planning to rent a Rv in Denver for a week in July and want to see RMNP. Is a 30ft RV allowed through the park? I know we can't go up Old Fall River Road but is it passable everywhere else? Is there a shuttle bus that goes up to Old Fall River Road? We also heard about the altitude effecting smaller children. Should we not take them to see RMNP?

Thanks in Advance

Yes, RVs are allowed in the park, just be aware that it will be slow going up Trail Ridge Road and that using the larger turnoffs and scenic areas will be appreciated by those behind you! Old Fall River Road doesn't have a shuttle, but you will generally see the same scenery as you do on Trail Ridge, so you won't miss anything except a really bumpy ride! Here's a webpage from the Park Service website on RMNP that talks about driving in the park - very important to use your gears more when you're going down instead of your brakes: nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/mtn_driving.htm

There is a shuttle bus on Bear Lake Road that you should consider, which will bring you to an area of the park with great trails to hike for the whole family. Try the path to Nymph Lake, or beyond to Dream and Emerald Lakes for an easy hike with exquisite scenery. For a totally flat path with great scenery, there's a one-mile loop around Sprague Lake where I believe the shuttle bus does stop. The website I mentioned above has all the essential info on the park.

If you're just going up and down Trail Ridge Road, you won't be there long enough for the altitude to have any lasting effects on anyone, including the children. Children are not more susceptible to high altitude than adults. The adults will probably notice the thin air more, actually, if you go for a walk at the top. It is essential that everyone drink LOTS of water while you're traveling in Colorado, not just because of the altitude, but because it's a very dry state with generally low humidity. Often when people experience headaches here, it's more from dehydration than altitude. If you're traveling through the mountains for any extended time, just take it easy for a couple of days once you're above 7,500 feet and drink your water, and you should be just fine!
