Albuquerque sites are spread out across the city, many miles between. To walk to Old Town and the museums, zoo/bio park and many restaurants, you will need to stay in Old Town area. The Midtown and Uptown areas have many chain hotels, some have restaurants nearby but few sites. Sandia Resort is on the far north side of the city, not much else there. Good restaurant west of there is El Pinto.

I think for your family wanting a pool, etc. the Best Western Rio Grande Hotel, which is about 2 blocks north of Old Town with museums, shopping and some restaurants. Another choice would be the Monterey Non-Smoking Motel. An old route 66 location, but exceptionally clean and well run. They have a pool also. Located two blocks west of Old Town. You cannot be a smoker and stay there, not even smoking outside. If you click on DE Keith Schrer, he talks extensively about Monterey.

As Casa said, midtown and uptown have a lot of hotels with most offering at least a continental breakfast. In mid-town, the ClubHouse Inn has a full hot breakfast, nice pool and is close to entrances to I-40 and I-25. La Quinta also is a good choice.

As sandiaman says, I'm a huge fan of Monterey Non-Smokers Motel. As already noted, they are VERY clean and I've had nothing but good experiences there. Their rates are quite low so the value is excellent. They do have free wifi and an outdoor pool (VERY clean as well). They do not have suites or breakfast. Each room does have a small refrigerator.

I think that I've also heard good things about the EconoLodge across the street from the Monterey. So perhaps another option as well.
