After several errands on Saturday, we checked out the ABQ Museum of Art & History. It's been a while for us. The museum is even more impressive now and quite a value. ($8 for resident family of 4.) The outdoor concert venue (jazz on summer nights I recall) is also much improved. Kth is right about parking. The old lot is gone and you park to the south of the museum. Just remember your space number and then they enter it on a computer inside so you don't get a ticket. The history space downstairs is in for a two-year renovation and there's only a small space devoted to history on the main floor. They were also in between major exhibitions. Some photographs were up in the halls from their excellent collection and the works (in the east gallery) from their permanent collection is worth a visit alone. There's a gift shop, an educational center (it just closed when we got there), and a cafe operated by Slate Street Cafe, a favorite. It was a perfect visit for us with small children. Just right amount of time, too.
We visited the sculpture garden in the front and on the south side and out the back of the sculpture garden found a back entrance to a pleasant Old Town patio. The bonus for us was there was a toy store right there and the Poco Loco Magic & Jokes shop. While my spouse ventured around to the many other shops in the area, which she obviously enjoyed, the boys and I spent some time in the magic shop. It is VERY SMALL (as many of the shops there are) but the boys loved it. The owner is a wonderful person. He opened last April Fool's and he also does a Tuesday magic happy hour at High Noon. All in all a nice find to recommend for visiting families with children around Old Town, in addition to the Rattlesnake Museum, Explora, natural history museum, etc.
