Sandia Mountain closing...

"Because of fire concerns, this weekend will be your last chance to enjoy much of the Sandia Mountains this summer.

The Sandia Ranger District says it's closing to the public beginning Monday. During the closure, the Sandia Crest Observation Area, the Tram and the Ski Area will remain open.

A handful of trails are open, and some picnic grounds will stay open for day use only.

The closure will last through October 31, unless officials decide conditions have changed and it can reopen."

With conditions as they are, the Sandia closure is not surprising. This applies to La Luz trail. It's become common to close La Luz this time of year until the monsoons come in earnest. The La Luz race is around the first Sunday of August and my recollection is that the mountain has been reopened just before the race once we get some regular rainfall for the season. The closure order is effective until Oct. 31, but based on recent history there's hope for reopening sooner than that. I'd bet it'll be at least a good month, however, before it does. Foothill trails are open and the area within the ski boundaries at top of the tram is open.

We are just booking a trip to visit ABQ and Santa Fe and considering staying in Sandia Mtns Oct 11-20. Does this sound like a dumb thing to do given they are closing Sandia? My first time out there. Thanks, Jane

You should be fine in October.

The problem is occurring now until we get our summer monsoons.

If the monsoons start up as normal, then we should be OK...

Traditionally, the monsoons start Jul4th weekend but time will tell if this year is normal or not.

Curious where you plan to stay in Sandia mountains? No developed camping available; wilderness. Perhaps you are thinking something nearby?
