Visit to San Antonio in December 2013

Hello,

My family and I are visiting from Philly in December we are trying to get ideas of places to see while there. What the weather will be like and are there any beaches we could visit (we are okay with taking a drive if needed). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

It's about 2 and a half hours to the beach from SA. Certainly nice to walk along if the day is clear and not too windy. You can also drive along the beach in most places.

Weather can be warm 70s or cold 40s, just depends on how strong the cold front happens to be.

What types of activities do you enjoy? - there are lots in SA Austin and The Hill country (closer than CC.)

I love the beach in the winter but be advised the water will be too cold for swimming. The best beaches are on Mustang Island, a good 2 1/2 hours from San Antonio. As already mentioned, you could get temps in the 70's or temps in the 40's in December.

Thank you for your reply. We are really up for anything, we are looking forward to the Riverwalk, Alamo & Missions. Trying to see if there was a place to see a rodeo? Mexican Market also looks like a fun thing to do. We will have a 7 year old with us so Sea World or Great Adventure.

Any other sight seeing options that I might not be aware of?

Hoping for the weather to be in the 70's!!!

Mustang Beach does look like a nice place to visit if the weather is good.

There are several events in Old Gruene and Wimberley nearby.

Things you can't find in the Northeast.

Just do a Google search for Christmas in...

Events are listed for the whole month of December.

Port Aransas on Mustang Island is very doable as a day trip. If you get some agreeable weather start out early in the morning and spend the day at the beach driving back in the late afternoon or evening.

Plenty of nice little coastal eateries as well or you could spend the night and visit Corpus Christi and take in the Texas State Aquarium and or USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.

Children's Museum - great for the younger kiddos, within walking distance from most downtown hotels. http://www.sakids.org/

The Buckhorn Museum is across the street from the Children's Museum. Lots and lots of stuffed animals (the real kind). www.buckhornmuseum.com

The zoo is great, one of the best in the country, www.sazoo-aq.org It will require a bus, cab or short car trip. Once you're there, you can also take a miniture train to the Witte Museum. www.wittemuseum.org Among other things it has a fun science treehouse.

Just north of SA on I-35 you'll find Natural Bridge Caverns http://www.naturalbridgecaverns.com/ In addition to being one of the biggest caves in Texas, this is a great family sport with well developed trails and lots of activities including a more physical tour that includes repelling. There's panning for gem stones and a drive-through wildlife park.

Guadalupe State Park is fun even in the fall. Picnic are with grills right by the water, great for hot dogs or hamburgers. There is shallow water that you could sick your feet in but it'll be cold.

Restaurants-

Mi Tierra has great decorations, strolling Maraichis, and a great bakery/candy counter.

Rainforest Cafe is a natural. It's pricey but fun.

The Cove is a quirky but way cool spot with playscape, basketball hoop, pingpong table and They have a great menu with yummy fish tacos, salads, sandwiches, burgers, lots of appetizers, etc. Also a large beer selection, ice cream, a laundromat, and car wash!

Several restaurants have playgrounds - Tycoon Flats on N. St. Mary's; Sea Island Seafood; Two Brothers Bar B Que; Willies on 281; La Hacienda de los Barrios;

My kids liked Luby's, being able to pick from the cafeteria line.

Giant cinnamon rolls at LuLu's are always a hit.

Amy's Ice cream in the Quary.

How about Austin, TX? Is it worth a drive while we are visiting? Weather? Things to do there?
