Salt Lake City car rentals

Any advice on car agencies that are good at SLC airport?

I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks

Rule of thumb whenever renting a car is to stick with the majors - Hertz, Avis, National, etc. Do think twice in SLC about Fox, which gets lots of negative reviews. Also note that while MOST rental companies are on airport - 2 minute walk from baggage - there are a few that are not and the will greatly add to your pickup and return time. I would suggest you just shop for the best price then apply the rule of thumb on majors if they aren't that much more expensive.

I rent exclusively Avis. Also know the Avis manager at SLC. Good operation.

Good luck.

What T&C said. We always rent with the major one and never had problems. Last one was with Hertz.

Thank you both. TumbleweedandCactus, glad to hear that because I think we have decided on Avis.

Warning, the Thrifty car rental is not honest in their pricing. They are an independent car rental and will charge a lot of extras to get more money from you. The price I was quoted and received from the website was not honored. They are somewhat under staffed. The cars are ok and fairly new.

I urge you to avoid Fox anywhere.

Don't use Thrifty!! They are rude, and don't follow through with what they promise, We reserved a car seat for our grand daughter who is 16 mo. old. When we checked in they didn't have a car seat and told us to go buy one at Walmart! The entire rental was a waste of money for us as we had a car that we couldn't take or grand daughter in and that was the only reason we rented it.

Whatever you do, don't rent from AVIS at Salt Lake City International Airport.

I have rented there before and never had a problem, but it looks like they have new management that is hell-bent on screwing you up.

This time we rented small SUV for a Christmas week, for a ski trip. Problems started during me picking up the car. Counter clerk told me that the small SUVs they have are only 2-wheel drive and to get a 4-wheel drive, I would need to get a larger car for the additional $45.00 per day, that is exactly twice the original price. When I refused, I was given keys from VW Tiguan that was 4-wheel drive. So everything the clerk told me was blatant lie.

Next day the "Check Engine" came on and I have to return the vehicle for replacement. The replacement vehicle, this time it was 4-wheel drive Ford Escape (with constant bugging reminder "You need to change engine oil," but this one I could ignore), and as the lady at the counter told me, they had plenty of 4-wheel drive small SUVs. Agin the first clerk was lying.

My return flight was at 6:30 AM on January 1st, 2014. When I came to the airport about 4:30 am on January 1st nobody was available at the rental kiosk in the return area, and there were no pens available to complete the rental agreement. This is new for me. I have visited Salt Lake City the last 6 Christmas weeks, and regularly departed early in the morning on January 1st. This is the first time, no clerk was available. I dropped the rental agreement in the box, and proceeded to board my flight.

On January 9th, Avis charged my card $805.98. When I called them, they told me

that the car was returned on January 6th. Manager was, of course! attending a meeting, so I had to call and complain their central office. Hopefully, they would do something about that, since I have airline ticket and a receipt from the Philadelphia airport parking, where I picked my car around 4 pm on January 1st, to prove that there is absolutely no way I could be in Utah till Jan 6th.

I have used Avis for quite some time and NEVER EVER I have encountered such blatant liars and thieves as work in SLC airport location.

Any issues with Alamo? Showing the cheapest rates for a full size. SUV would be nicer but more expensive. Coming March 8 and will drive to PC and to PCMR each morning from a few miles away.

I've rented with Alamo (and National) at SLC a few times in the past; no problems.
