A week in Oct

Hi all,

Our son moved to Utah for work and we are coming to see him for a week.

He will work in the day m-th but have a long weekend off.

What shall hubs and I do during the day while he's working and what shall we do for the long weekend? Something not too wild for hub's back please.

We are beyond excited both to see our son and visit Utah. Have heard many wonderful things from our son! He loves living there.

Thanks, m

What do you enjoy doing? When you say nothing wild what does that mean? Do you want city stuff in SLC or go on a road trip to the desert to see Moab and the national parks there? Park City and the mountains are close enough for day trips. SLC has cultural things and museums.

Things to do in the SLC area -

Downtown:

Visit Temple Square, including the 2 visitor centers, Conference Center, Beehive House. Free organ concert in the Tabernacle at 12 Noon. There is no charge to visit the public buildings on Temple Square. Take an escorted tour to the 26th floor observation deck of the LDS Church Office Building for outstanding views of the SL Valley. Free tours to the observation deck are available weekdays, 9 AM to 3:30 PM.

Visit State Capitol Building

Hike to Ensign Peak for great city views. This is a nice evening activity for sunset views to the west.

At the Gateway Center – Clark Planetarium,

Visit Memory Grove and walk up the paved pedestrian path in to City Creek Canyon..

Free family friendly concerts at the Gallivan Center on Tuesday and Thursday evening. (Big Band, Jazz, etc.)

Within 5 miles of downtown:

Liberty Park and Tracy Aviary

Hogle Zoo

This is the Place Historic Park

Natural History Museum at the University of Utah

Red Butte Gardens

Sugarhouse Park

Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning at Pioneer Park

In the Salt Lake Valley:

Wheeler Historic Farm

Living Planet Aquarium

Kennecott Copper Mine

Thanksgiving Point - Museum of Curiosity, Natural History Museum

Beyond Salt Lake City:

Antelope Island State Park – Bison herd, great place for sunsets over the Great Salt Lake. Float in the Great Salt Lake.

Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington.

Free Aerospace Museum at Hill Field in Layton.

In the mountains:

Drive up to Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Take the Tram to the top for stellar views. Do some hiking at the top.

Wild flowers may be in bloom at Alta. Alta is just beyond Snowbird.

Drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Silver Lake. Do easy walk around the lake. You may see the resident Moose.

From Silver Lake, drive over Guardsman Pass in to Park City. This is another great drive. In Park City, walk historic Main Street. Visit the Park City Museum. Lots of great restaurants on Main Street.

At Park City Mountain Resort, there’s an Alpine Slide, Mountain Coaster and other activities. Visit the Olympic Park where there’s a museum and zip line.

Drive up to the end of Millcreek Canyon and hike.

You could also take 3 days and 2 nights and go to Moab, Utah to visit Arches and Canyonlands NP.

Whoa. Okay I'm printing that one! Wow! Thank you!

I have a lot to digest now. Son is new there so he really doesn't know what the sights are yet.

Very helpful.

Thanks again, m

A great list of things to do, for sure. Given that you're coming in October, don't expect wildflowers. And check for seasonal closures such as Park City Mountain, Lagoon, Utah Olympic Park, etc.

Have fun.

You don't say which week in October. If it's the first week, you can still catch the fall colors and the drive mentioned up and over Guardsmen's Pass is great for aspens!

If you are coming later, and I guess you are with the mention of a long weekend, you can do other things. If your son gets the Veterans holiday you shouldn't have big crowds if you head to the Natl Parks. Utah normally has a major 4 day weekend in Oct where all the kids are out of school and what seems like the ENTIRE population of UT hits the road. Unbelievable crowds everywhere. Someone here can probably tell you which weekend that is. If your visit is during this week, maybe plan to visit a National Park on the other part of your week!

That 4 day weekend in October is the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st. Avoid the national parks on that weekend; especially Moab. Capitol Reef is only 3.5 miles away and won't see the crowds that the other parks will that weekend.

I copied and pasted that list from a saved doc on my computer and didn't adjust for the season. The wildflowers are long gone. Lagoon, if it's open at all, it will be on the weekends. The activities at Park City Mountain Resort will probably be shut down for the winter. If you are the first two weeks of the month, the Farmers Market will still be running.

Be advised that the weekend of Oct 6 and 7 is the Semi Annual Conference for the LDS Church. Temple Square will be crowded. It slightly impacts hotel availability in downtown SLC.

Holy smokes who knew?

Thanks for the save!! We don't have it booked. We can come anytime in Oct. This info is gold!

Daughter is coming to Utah this weekend to see her brother. I think he wants to show off Utah to everyone! Anything special going on this weekend? Anything to avoid?

Thanks, m

By the way, Son works for you! He works for the state of Utah keeping it beautiful.

He keeps sending us pictures of whatever he's working on to keep out the invasive species and track the growth of things y'all want there. :)

This week is the Tour of Utah bike race that concludes in Park City on Saturday and Sunday. It causes some road closures in areas. Information about it has been readily available in news source. Unless your son has been too busy working to read local newsites, he should be aware of the race. Park City can be easily avoided if they do things elsewhere.

Just caught a significant typo in my previous post. Capitol Reef is 3.5 HOUrS away from SLC, not miles.
