Glaciers and young children - do they mix??!!!!

Hi everyone.

We are currently planning a trip to South Island next February and would ideally like to include a visit to FJ and/or Fox glaciers. However, we have two young children (aged 23 months and 4yrs at time of travel) and was therefore wondering what, if anything, we could realistically do in the way of "experiencing" the glaciers? Im guessing that they arent pushchair (buggie) friendly!!!! Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Emily :0)

Glaciers can be dangerous places and are no place for young children. Sorry but there is no soft way of putting it

Hello Emily :)

While the glaciers themselves aren't possible for your wee ones, you can still enjoy the scenic walks to the lookouts (the access tracks are stroller friendly).

Plus if driving down the West Coast there are many stunning beaches your kids will enjoy for the unusual stones and piles of driftwood. Do ensure you have long sleeves, hats and plenty of sandfly repellent handy as the little nippers are fierce - and the bites remain itchy for weeks afterwards.

Will you also be going to Aoraki/Mt Cook? There you can all explore the Tasman glacier by boat. Your 4 year old will love the icebergs http://www.glacierexplorers.com/

Happy travels :)

At both Franz and Fox you will be fine up to the barrier. At Fox the car park is basically at the barrier, and at Franz joseph there is a bush wak of about 10 minutes that you could push a wheel chair or use a Zimmer frame on. Just do not go past the barrier. Chances are your children will be much more inpressed with the waterfalls, stones and drift wood. The West coast has heaps of these.

At the childrens age, to see a glacier from a distance is all the children will expect, they don't know what they don't know so it isnt an issue.

more of the problem is maybe for your selves to enjoy going onto the glaciers together with out the children. maybe this could be an opportunity for a commercial enterprise to offer childcare for glacier climbers.

the walkways to the glacier viewing is wheel chair friendly, which means push chairs. get the children to lok out for water falls, birds and small ice bergs in the river.
