Seals in South Island NZ

Where is the best place to seals in the South Island NZ on west coast? I have heard Cape Foulwind but is there other colonies further down the coast?

The largest accessible seal colonies are around Kaikoura, including Ohau Pt where you park beside SH1, no walking required; or drive out from Kaikoura to the near-by seal colony at low tide.

The Kaikoura seals are the most accessable.

Kaikoura is the best for up close and personal. Cape Foulwind is OK, a nice walk but the viewing area is quite high up above the colony and it's quite hard to pick the seals out amongst the rocks.

Do you have to go all the way to Kaikoura or can you see the seals further south? We are heading across to the West Coast around Westport and don't want to go too far out of our way.

Then your best bet is to visit the Cape Foulwind/Tauranga Bay seal colony(take binoculars so you can get an even better view of them). I have heard that if you continue on along the walkway you can come across odd seals amongst the rocks but don't know for sure as we only got as far as the colony and the viewing platforms. We also saw a couple of random seals on the beach front at Punakaiki but this was just luck, they can come ashore anywhere along the coast.

Hi Debbie

There are plenty of other seal colonies on the West Coast ( where I live ) but most are on isolated beaches. Cape Foulwind is def the best place to see them on the West Coast.

Gillespies Beach is another option, near Fox.

Thanks for all your help. We did stay at Cape Foulwind and the seals were great to watch. The walk to the colony is spectacular
