helicopter or winged plane for scenic flight over Glaciers?

we are using Hokitika as a base for a scenic flight/helicopter ride over the Frans Josef and Fox Glaciers with a snow landing. Travelling with our 5 year old boy

is it true that a winged aircraft is preferred over a helicopter as the latters do not turn off their motor blades after the landing?

can I depart from Hokitika or should i fly from the townships of the Glaciers which involves a drive of about 2 hours?

tks

The flights leave from the Glaciers. You will need to drive down there from Hokitika

About two weeks ago I was in Fox, and there were 'only' helicopters. The flight is wonderful, and the motor was turned off on the glacier. The only place with winged planes is Mt. Cook. You can reserve on the same day you fly, so to see the weather first.

I'd advise you to find accomodation in Fox,so you can also go to Lake Matheson in the morning to see the mirror images of the mountains.Hope this helps.

A Helicopter flight will probably include a landing, a fixed wing plane won't!

We considered both, went for a Helicopter flight over Doubtful sound, we weren't disappointed and included two landings

Actually, a fixed wing ski plane will definitely do a landing.

Check it out here - and there are lots of videos of landings on Youtube.

Yip Mt Cook Ski Planes land on a glacier (the Tasman).

The engine is turned off and you can get out for a walk and snowball fight.

They also have a office at Franz Josef.

I highly reccommend them.

My son wants to do the glacier landing at Mt Cook. I am a nervous flyer though, anyone know how long it takes and their experience of it to put my mind at ease?

Thanks all for your responses. I have booked Mt Cook Ski Planes, departing from Frans Josef and will drive down from Hokitika. I hope that the weather will permit which is why I have decided to stay 2 nights in Hokitika as if the first day has poor weather then we still have the 2nd day.

Thanks again

enjoy your flight PChua. :-)

onslow147, have a look at Mt Cook Ski Planes website. There are different times and flights depending on what you want to do.

Also read my review on them.
