Cathedral Cove advice

i know the trail is open again but the arch roped off after a rock fall. We will be traveling to NZ in January and wonder whether it is still worth visiting or will we be disappointed compared to all the photos.

If so which trail/beach is best to go to - kayaking probably not an option.

Also what is that area like in January (high season) is everywhere very busy? Any suggestions of nice places to stay to explore the area that are not too busy?

Any help welcomed thanks.

Yes worth visiting, definately; most people jump over the rope! Go to Hahei and follow the signs!

Sorry, never stayed in hahei, so can't offer advice on that.

Thanks - not sure our holiday insurance would cover us for jumping over the rope and being hit on the head by a rock but sounds like still worth the trip thanks!

generally the high season is busy but it depends on what you are use too! still worth a visit as it is a very nice beach as is hahei, cooks, lonely bay & flaxmill. all fairly close by. Another couple of nice beachs abit further afield are otama, matarangi opito & new chums. check out the ''whitianga'' web site.

You'll be OK with the rocks - when you get there you will see a constant stream of people doing it; also, here in NZ we have a thing called ACC which covers accidental injury :) You'll be all good!

There are usually boats that come in and out too, so you could use one of them. The other place that is not too far away that could also be of interest is Cook's beach at Whitianga - lovely!!

Thanks big_ian someone who lives in the area has told me they are currently doing work which they hope means it will be re-opened for the high season.

In UK if you had disobeyed a 'safety warning' you certainly would NOT be covered by any insurance ...which just shows what a much more civilised nation you are!

When we went there in January we discovered there is another very picturesque bay on the near side of the arch (no need to jump over the rope). In fact in the late afternoon when we were there it seemed to be sunnier and nicer than Cathedral Cove. Only problem is the name is not so romantic, I think it is called Mare's Leg Bay :-) Definitely go.

i agree with everyone above. the walk to get there is some of the most beautiful scenery we have seen in NZ and the beach on the other side of cathedral cove is absolutely stunning. i would DEFINITELY recommend vising here. and if you have a chance and don't feel like going kayaking take the Hahei Explorer speed boat trip. beautiful views of cathedral cove and you also see other amazing parts of the coastline that are not as easily accessible from the shore.

Just to say we visited in January and had a fabulous day on the beach - even though it was a Saturday in high season there was plenty of room particularly in the morning and it was a great end to a wonderful 3 weeks in NZ.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
