Is it safe to take a bus to Mindo or should one hire a taxi?

We just returned from Ecuador last week. Jan 20/09

Following the advise of this forum three of us took the 8:20am bus to Mindo. $2.50 ea. (one way) If you travel during the week the bus is nearly empty. Never did we feel unsafe. A single American Female exchange student was on the bus as well. Not a single problem. Make sure you buy your return ticket right after you get off the bus.

The only thing I would caution you about is TIME. The bus ride was 2.5 hours. We arrived in Mindo around 11am. The same bus returns to Quito at 2pm. What no one mentioned was the 5K hike it takes to get to the zip lines-cable car attraction-waterfall walk. By the time you find it it's time to head back to town for the bus. We managed to take the cable car across the ravine and hike down to 2 of the 5 waterfalls,

($5 per person) But it was a rush to make it back on time.

If you go, I advise staying the night. We met lots of fellow Gringos who were spending time in Mindo. There is actually a Female Hostel owner who greets everyone as they get off the bus. She was a great source of information and directions.

An added bonus were the 2 sweet dogs that escorted

us to the attractions. One actually got on the cable car with us and lead the way to the waterfalls.

yes but you should keep your backpack or carryon on your lap or pay for a ticket for another seat to place it on-there were reports of slashers under the seat when we rode the bus last year-see my prior posts on this subject. also the quito bus station is large and confusing so give yourslef plenty of time to find your bus location- you can buy tickets in advance through local travel agencies for a slight fee which would save you the cost of the round trip taxi ride and several hours of time back and forth.
