need a rental car ? staying at four seasons

Hello!

We have decided to splurge on our honeymoon and book it at The Four Seasons in Wailea. We are getting married in Kapalua so we will experience the west side of Maui and than honeymoon on the South side. Im wondering if we'll need a rental car when on the south side? I see this resort has a shuttle that will take you around Wailea. We will have a car when on the west side so well get to experience that beforehand. Is there a lot to do on the south side that we'll need a car for??

Thanks!

Ilana, you can email the concierge ahead of time if you know the specific dates you will need the car. A mid-size was $78 plus only several dollars for tax. The rates may be different depending on when you travel. I don't know what the cutoff is for the parking fee but we returned the car around 10:45 pm both nights. The concierge desk closes at 11pm and that is where you hand in your paperwork when you are done but they told us if we were late to give it to the valet. There is a gas station about 4 miles away on the same side of the main road. It closes at 11 pm (in a shopping center with a supermarket). We were so glad we booked a tour for the road to Hana. We used Valley Isle Excursions and were very satisfied with the tour and felt it was worth the money. They picked us up at promptly 6:45 and we returned around 5:30pm.

I'm sorry but really, spending all this money on shuttles, taxi's and one or two day's worth of a rental car adds up very quickly. Do the math. See if your paying for tours, and transportation, renting a car for a day or two adds up to more than just renting a car for the duration and the parking fees.

Yes, you should have an idea of costs regarding renting or not and what you activities you want to do. For us, parking for 7 days would have been $120. The rental was about an additional $160 so it worked out to be almost the same to rent a car for 2 days ($80 each day) and take taxis to/from the airport ($55 each way plus tips). We just really, really like the convenience factor of taxis to/from the airport and it took only 1-2 minutes to rent the car right at the Four Seasons for the 2 days we knew we would need it. The cost differential was minimal. The hotel staff gives you a private ride in a nice Escalade within Wailea and we never really had to wait. We would still have taken the tour excursion to Hana even if we had rented a car for the entire week. As we get older, on vacation we enjoy letting someone else do the driving once in a while so we can just sit back and relax.
