Camping at Muir Woods

my husband and I have rented a campervan for June. We would like to visit and stay for a night at a Muir Woods. Is that possible? Any advice would be appreciated.

Here is info on Muir Woods

http://www.nps.gov/muwo/faqs.htm

Can I camp at Muir Woods?

Unfortunately, no; Muir Woods is a day-use area. There are a variety of camping opportunities in nearby parks however. Check out our brochure for nearby camping locations.

Always a good idea to look for the official site of the park or venue , read the FAQs and we are more than happy to help you if you cannot find some info.

The closest place you could possibly park your van for the night is at Pantoll Campground in Mount Tamalpais State Park. This is halfway up the mountain that surrounds Muir Woods. It's a two mile hike up from Muir, but a longer, winding drive by motor vehicle.

They allow "enroute camping" for RVs in the parking lot between 6pm and 9am. No facilities except restrooms. And there is a fee, you can't just pull in and park without checking in with rangers.

When you get to Muir you will understand why there is no camping there. There are two small parking lots (the first mostly reserved for large tour buses). In summer the road leading to Muir becomes overflow parking for 1-2 miles in each direction.

The Woods is located in a rather small valley. The path way through the Woods is about 1-2 miles long. There are trails up the hill and out of the Woods. One of those would lead you to Pantoll that Bayatuning mentions.

You will need campground reservations wherever you go in California in summer. Whether it be a National Park, State Park or private campground. It would be extraordinarily unusual to be able to cruise up and find a place. And, of course, just parking by the side of the road is illegal throughout the state.

No, boondocking is allowed in California - away from the cities and crowded areas. We've done it for years, as have many RVers. There are some restrictions.

Yes, way, way away. And the OP was asking about Muir Woods. There is no place close to Muir to boondock.

(Somehow I just knew you were going to jump at me for that sooner or later.)

It is important to give accurate information :-)

No, not so far away. We've RV'd all over California and boondocked not far from cities. Where do you usually stay in your RV?

>>You will need campground reservations wherever you go in California in summer.<<

Not *all* of California. It's a big state.

Alexandra M, you say you have "rented a campervan for June". Does that mean for a month? That's great - you'll have time to travel all around California!

If you need any additional information, please don't hesitate to ask!
