We travel to South Dakota twice a year; early July and late September/early October. July is usually hot, a dry heat, upper 80's - 90's. We have found this time of the year to be not as rainy as May or June. Thunderstorms do occur this time of the year but quickly move in and out. Rarely do you have a full day of clouds. The downside to July is that the Black Hills are a little more crowded. Not to the point that we have long waits, though. Fall, however, is our favorite time of the year to be there. Attractions are still open in Sept., some with shorter hours, and the tourist traffic is lighter. The days are usually mid 70's to low 80's with cool evenings (40's & 50's). The fall colors peak the end of September. Spearfish Canyon is especially beautiful. Because it is cooler the wildlife seems to be more abundant. Custer State Park holds it's annual Buffalo Roundup the last weekend in Sept. The festival and roundup is fantastic and something I highly recommend.
Hi thanks for your response, we were looking to visiting mid June but are now thinking mid July. I do agree that fall is wonderfull did Bryce/Zion last year the colours were spectacular.
We found september a fantastic time for a visit but if you want to include Yellowstone I'd do that first from Denver and return Denver via Black Hills.
Tet's right. It makes more sense to do you longer drive initially to Yellowstone and head back to Denver from the Black Hills. It's only about a 6 hour drive from Denver to the Hills.
September is a fantastic time for Yellowstone, if you can travel then. With our daughter in school, fall trips are tough. I miss not traveling at that time, but I also love showing our daughter our beautiful country. July will be crowded in both areas, but you can't equate it to Disney crowds. The Black Hills aren't bad as far as crowds in late August, when some schools are back in session.
