Mt. Rushmore Drive By Viewing

Is it possible to drive by and view w/o touring? Would this be possible on July 3rd, and if so, how late before the traffic backs up?

Thanks

It is possible to drive past Mt. Rushmore on the highway. The traffic is very congested on July 3rd, people start arriving for the fireworks early in the day.

What is very cool is if you drive Needles, thru Custer, on your way to Mount Rushmore, every so often you get to a point on the road where you can see the monument thru openings in the trees-truly breathtaking. Once there, you can see it from the road and if July 3rd is your only day to do so, is probably advisable over entering the park.

However, if you have an alternate day, say the 2nd or the 5th, it is worthwhile paying the entrance/parking fee. Very humbling and patriotic. I had seen it twice during daytime and the last time we visited we went for the night lighting which was a whole different experience and one I would highly recommend. Only downside to the night lighting was driving back to our cottage in Custer in the dark-kind of a scary ride!
