Is Barstow a good base for Mojave Preserve then to SD

Hi

We are flying to LA in July and have a few days to travel before going to San Diegio. I have a plan to catch the bus to Barstow then rent a car to see the sights of Majove National Preserve and surrounds then drive to Dan Diego. Is Barstow close enough to the area to makes trips to see everything?

thanks

Sorry I'm late for your post. Are you still interested?

Any reason you would not rent the car in LA, take it to the desert, then drive it to San Diego? Why the bus?

Do you know how hot it is out there in the summer?

Hi

Yes still planning. We did think about hiring a car in LA - just a bit nervous about all the traffic as we have never driven in the US before. Yes we know it will be stinking hot,and we are also going to Las Vegas but all ok given that we come from a stinking hot country!

any advise would be appreciated

thanks

You've already discovered there are no towns nearby the Mojave National Preserve (MNP) and Barstow is the closest. Do you have a good map? There are three motels in Baker but they're such low quality they rarely show up on any internet searches. On some maps you can see Ludlow on Interstate 40. There is a decent motel there plus a coffee shop and two gas stations. Otherwise, not much else in Ludlow but Route 66 and the Dairy Queen. My favorite place to stay is the Hotel Nipton but that is very remote which bothers most people.

Barstow has a wide range of motels from low end to quite good. Dining options aren't that great. There are plenty of stores and gas stations. Unfortunately it's kind of a run down city with too many poor people, old cars, and dilapidated housing. It's like that movie CARS where the interstate highway by-passed the little town. Except Barstow is not a cute Disney cartoon.

A free map and guide of the MNP is available but it's possible you can't find one until you get to the visitor center at the Kelso Depot. Gas up each morning at Barstow. I don't think there's any food availble at MNP so you'd need to bring a picnic lunch each day.

Here are some internet websites you may find useful in planning your trip (if you haven't found them already):

nps.gov/moja - This is the official website.

desertusa.com - On the left is a list of Quick Links. Click on Places to Go. Scroll down and click on California. On the list of National Parks is MNP.

americansouthwest.net - Click on California. Under NPS Units is MNP.

Another suggestion: Go to the California forum in Trip Advisor and enter into the search window: mojave national preserve. Set the sort button by date and read through a dozen or more postings and threads. This will be good reading - to see what others have asked and the replies given.

I also suggest browsing through the Barstow postings for the last year or so. Be on the look out for entries by Tet14. He does a good job of mentioning the best places to see.

Feel free to ask more questions as you develop your plans.
