albuquerque to mesa verde to monument valley

Hi all. We are travelling along route 66 , presently at Amarillo, and we are trying to work out whether its feasible to go from Albuquerque via route 550 and then route 160 to Mesa Verde.

Go from Gallup off routé 66 up Route 491.

We plan to stay overnight at lodgings at Mesa Verde area/ park.

Then we'd like to go onto Monument valley . On our maps it looks OK to go across on via route 160 then north on 191.

Does this sound reasonable ? We only have a 6 cylinder hire car - not a four wheel drive.

Thanks in advance for any advice or info

You won't need a four wheel drive vehicle, except you won't be able to drive your rental car into the Monument Valley Tribal Park. The dirt road is very rough in places, very deep sand in others. You have great views from the highway and from the parking lot and deck/restaurant at The View lodge, but I highly recommend taking one of the tours with a Navajo guide there. There are several companies, but we chose the sunset tour with Navajo Spirit, very highly rated on Trip Advisor, and for good reason, IMO. I don't normally like tours much, but this one was a highlight of our trip, and one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Worth every penny. But ask about an air conditioned vehicle (or take a sunrise or sunset tour), because Monument Valley is likely to be blazing hot this time of year.

550 to Durango, then 160 to Mesa Verde would be the better route than going through Gallup.

Yes, you can go 160 to 191 to 163, but you could also go 160>162 to Bluff, Utah. http://bluffutah.org/bluff-history-tour/ then to Mexican Hat and Monument Valley.

If you have the time, it would be well worth it to drive into the mountains north of Durango along 550. Drive as far as Silverton if you have the time. Beautiful views! And the Durango-Silverton Railroad is one of the top historic/scenic rides in the country if you have an extra day. (And the mountains will be much cooler than the rest of your route!)
