Day Trips from Richmond in August???

Looking for places to go or see around Richmond area of Virginia for this August. Will be there for about 4 or 5 days. Saw the main highlights of Richmond about 15 yrs ago, including Capitol, big hotel, river/canal walk, boo jangles and shopping mall. Been to Williamsburg for two days, saw Monticelo, got short taste of Blue Ridge parkway. Anything else? Ocean, nature, wildlife, historic? Is Bush Gardens worth seeing for other than rides? Going to DC for five days after leaving Richmond. All help appreciated.

Hope this isn't too late, but sounds like you need a taste of the Chesapeake Bay. Check out Urbanna for a charming, small town on the water experience:

Or maybe you will want to cool down in some caverns. Check out Luray and others here:

That virginia.org site has other ideas. Urbanna is about 1.5 hours outside of Richmond, to the east. There is also a Rapahannock River cruise where you can spot bald eagles. It stops at a winery (but y'all have WAY better wine than we do):

The caverns are 2 to 3 hours away, to the west.
