I-295 around Richmond

I just read on another site that this part of I-295 is used as a speed trap. I was wondering if anybody has heard about this. What is the speed limit around this area? I do not plan on speeding but I like to know these things.

You could check whether that's true on these websites http://www.speedtrap.org and http://trapster.com or perhaps someone on this forum could give you first-hand advice. At any rate, in my experience, using the I-295 bypass is no faster than driving on I-95 thru downtown Richmond. Although the bypass seems slightly more relaxing with less traffic, it is several miles longer than via I-95 downtown.

I also want to caution you that the town of Emporia, VA (on I-95 near the NC state line) is a major notorious speed-trap according to discussions on this forum and also discussed extensively on the Virginia forum of another website http://www.city-data.com .

The speed limit on 295 is mostly 70. I don't consider it a speed trap. There are sometimes cops set up with radar, but no more than most roads.

Maryland Mist is correct that 95 is generally the better option unless maybe it is rush hour. And Emporia is definitely a speed trap.

Much has been written about selective enforcement of the speed limit on the portion of I-295 that passes through the city of Hopewell. I don't consider it a speed trap. It's more of a political issue.

Here is a link to one relevant article by a local reporter.

The relevant issue for travelers is to not greatly exceed the 70 mph limit. Also, don't consider I-95 through Richmond at night without checking the current status of the I-95 Bridge Restoration Project.

There are often major delays, especially at night or in the very early morning.
