Want to have a glacier experience

Hi,

Hubby and I are here in Anchorage until May 10, finishing up my hospital contract. What are our options for glacier viewing? We've omitted a flight option - budget wise. We have done a snowmobile trip up in a mountain mine area out of Girdwood - and that tour company offers a glacier trip on snowmobiles too. Seems that the boat viewing options don't open til middle of May or later. Any suggestions?

Your best bet might be Matanuska Glacier on your own. With the light snowfall this year you might be able to get to Byron Glacier but not until the first week of May. Check out Knik Glacier too, maybe call and see if they will do a tour at that time of the year. It is on the wrong side (north) of the mountain so that could be tough but you never know.

A summer work stay is tempting. Too bad a huge pay cut comes with that since the winter "crisis" is over. We'll try getting to Byron Glacier. We tried, but the visibility was poor that day. Will check out the Matanuska Glacier too.

Thanks!

Maybe give one of these companies a call and and see about doing a private charter out of Whittier. You'll be renting the whole boat, so it won't be cheap. But if you can get some friends or coworkers to go too, that'll bring the price per person down. We did this about 10 years ago, but I don't remember who it was with....

Some companies pull their boats out for the winter and head to someplace warm & sunny but there may be one or two that stay in Whittier year round.

Matanuska Glacier. It's more safer and the weather is better. There is a fee as access to it is on private property. In the winter guides that take you out on sled pulled by snowmobile. I went out onto Byron in early May and had a frightening experience. Something really bad almost happened. Snow is getting rotten and unpredictable.

Thanks all for your suggestions. We had a fabulous 2 day trip over to Valdez, on the suggestion of a co-worker. The 6 hour drive - we stopped often - was beautiful. It was clear and so sunny. Last hour especially had views of snow topped mountains and frozen water falls. Took the ferry back to Whittier and had another fantastic view of inside passages, dolphins, seals, and glacier ice floes. The ferry trip was amazing! Highly recommend it.
