only 1 day in AK

We have only one full day in mid-October.

Arrive ANC Friday afternoon and leave just after midnight Saturday.

Not into doing city stuff /museums. Want to get outside and possibly see some wildlife.

We were thinking of doing doing a scenic drive to Seward, stopping along the way to possibly do some short hikes, (have a good map with tons of trails listed -- could use some reccomends), ..... the Sealife Center, lunch in Seward, coffee in Girdwood, and back in ANC in time for a late dinner before our flight.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Is the ANC-Seward drive 2 1/2 hours (without stops)?

I grew up in Buffalo so not afraid to drive in snow or ice, but is that road always pretty clear (suv 4x4)?

If not, what would be a good alternate plan?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Crossing our fingers for the rain to stop and the snow to come : )

You have to be really carefully about travelling anywhere south of Anchorage if you have strict flights. If there is any sort of accident on the Seward highway both directions are shut down, sometimes for hours. If there is an avalanche it could be a day or more. If you aren't worried about making your flight back, then its no problem, but if that concerns you take the warning. Girdwood wouldn't be as much of a problem as Seward, but it can be.
