Are there touristy sections of Anchorage to stay?

I am planning a first time trip to Anchorage the first week of July. This will be a family of 4 adults. We are flying in to Anchorage and renting a car. Having never been there, I want to pick a hotel that is within walking distance of shops, bars, or other urban attractions there. Makes for a nice evening walk after doing other things. Especially with all the daylight there. I just don't know the city at all, even by studying maps.

Is there a section of the city that would be recommended? I realize paying for parking at a hotel will leave a bad taste in my mouth, but does anyone here think that staying in town is a good idea?

DH played the Anchorage Golf Course on O'Malley Rd a few years ago. He rented clubs there and was thrilled to be playing golf at midnight. He loved the course, saw an elk while playing. Highly recommends it.
