we are renting a car and driving not only to fairbanks but to other destinations and was wondering what the price of gas is there. Here in Indian it is 2.50 a gallon. Also we can have a good meal for about 25$ for the two of us. What is the cost of meals there?

These all sound good. Thanks!

Any special places to eat maybe hidden away? Not expensive places - looking for local charm or character..

Will also go down to Seeward, so ideaa very welcome.

Second week of May is still pretty early for a lot of the outdoor activities and tourist sites. If going to denali NP and wanting to see wildlife and the park, the bus system does not really get going until the last week of May. Check out their site for exact date. In that last week you will only be able to get to Toklat River, mile 53 in denali, while starting on June 1st, you will be able to go as far as Fishcreek, mile 63. We had to bump our trip back a week a few years ago because we were just too early for the things we wanted to see.

Prices will be better for hotels, cars, rv's before June 1st or after Sept 1st.

We have had very little rain in the last week of May but also didn't have much sun. Just grey skies.

Hi, check out Kroger or their affiliate near you for their loyalty card - we have Fred Meyer up here and with a Fred Meyer card unleaded regular is about 2.25 - or you can go to Costco for about the same price - Safeway is a bit higher. Of course, none of these is available outside of towns where you might find gas as high as 2.50 or 2.75. Here in Anchorage you can do a decent meal for $25 without wine or liquor at some places. Depending on what and how you like to eat, plan on $40 for dinner and you will have lots of choices. A nice "secret" is a place called Aladdin's in a shopping center (strip mall we call them) at the corner of Tudor and Old Seward - they don't take reservations so plan on a wait if it is Fri or Sat - I think they are closed both Sun and Mon. We have a lot of the chains such as Outback, TGIF etc. and the usual Subways, burger chains and that sort. If you want a treat, try a steak at the Club Paris downtown on 5th Ave. across from the mall. Great breakfasts (they do other meals but breakfasts are best) are at Snow City Cafe on 3rd Ave. downtown. An old Alaskan hangout is the Lucky Wishbone (been here for 50 years!) on 5th as you come into town - great fried chicken. Just watch for the place with all the cop cars outside - it's one of their favorites! Hope this helps.

thanks for the gas price and eating info. Now what about a good place to get sourdough pancakes. When we lived in Fairbanks in 1960 was the last time I had them. Is there any place in Anchorage or Fairbanks to get the starter for these. They were oh so good.
