Arriving in the evening and stay one night

We will be arriving around 6pm at SeaTac on a Wednesday and staying one night before leaving for Portland around noon the following day on a 5 day roadtrip to SF. Is it worth the extra cost to stay near city center / Space Needle? Would there be anything to see by the time we get to the hotel, check-in and freshen up?

Or, should we save our dough, stay near the airport for around $100 and just drive in to the city (rental) the next morning?

The Space Needle is open until about 9:30 pm and the Chihuly Glass Museum/Garden until 10 pm (11 pm on Friday and Saturday). However if your flight is due in at 6 pm; you realistically won't get your baggage until about 6:30 pm. You would then need to take the shuttle bus to the car rental center so you really would not have time.

As for the following morning, most things don't open until about 9:30 or 10:00 am. If you really do want to see some of the downtown sights, you need to delay your departure until late afternoon.

Assuming your body clocks are on Eastern time, I'd probably save the money and crash near the airport (probably 7:30/10:30 by the time you're settled in.) Then use your body clock (dis)advantage the next morning - up with the birdies, pick up the car, and head into Seattle for breakfast at the Pike Place Market. (Use the HOV lanes and traffic won't be too bad.) Yes, you'll have to pay for parking (big deal, you're from NYC) but then tour by car around the city a little - West Seattle/Alki for great views, see the Fremont Troll, maybe drive along Lake Washington... then head out of town.

I would agree with ibgardyloo. Seattle is not really a night town especially during the week especially when compared to NY city. The only thing I would add is if you do stay down by the airport and you have some vacation energy that first night just drive into the city and grab a bite to eat. If you go into West Seattle there are a number of places on the waterfront that will give you a nice view of the city skyline. Then the next morning you can go and explore the sites.

Another advantage of staying down by the airport a lot of hotels down there include parking and if you stay by the Space Needle you can end up paying through the nose for parking.

We currently have a reservation at the Travelodge by the Space Needle, but it is easily costing twice as much as a Travelodge elsewhere. Anyway, we were planning on taking a cab from the airport to the hotel and picking up a rental the next morning from downtown. That bit of shuffle is to bypass the ridiculous fees of rentals from the airport; we are saving more than $300 on our weekly rental by not getting it at the airport.

Anyway, are there any particular areas or motels by the airport that we should look at for around $100-$120 that are also near a decent neighborhood with good dinner options? We would likely still be taking a cab to downtown the next morning to pick up our cab and see a bit of downtown Seattle.

You want it all in one location and that is not possible. The very urban gritty airport area does not have nice restaurants and neighborhoods...there is a reason the hotels are cheaper. It is basically a big highway with lodging. I like the Coast Gateway and adjacent restaurant next door to the airport for comfort and location. Downtown is a good 20-30 minute drive or light rail trip away. It is a long way to go to an area you are not familiar with for food or very short sightseeing in the dark. I don't see the point of that. Sort of like going into Midtown NYC from Newark just to eat and come right back....doable but what a pain.
