San Juan Island has a park just for watching orcas. It's called Lime Kiln.

A lot of people take boat tours out of Friday Harbor, but this method is starting to fall out of favor because there are often too many vessels at the same time, and the scientists have found that this disrupts the hunting patterns and can confuse the animals.

One of my favorites is to use the "Mystic Sea" out of Anacortes. The boat is safe, stable and clean. The crew are real pros and the trip is truly beautiful. You will go through the San Juans and are in the hands of people who respect the rights of the animals as well as the desire for you to have a great trip.

Another plus is that to get to Anacortes you can take I-5 and go through the back roads. This way you avoid long ferry lines, missed connections, and the stress. Be sure to stop (on the way back) in LaConner or on Camano Island.
