I do that drive all the time. For the most part you will be on I-5 after you cross the border. For a slower pace and to get across the border quicker you can cross at Lynden and you will be in a Dutch type city. There is a couple of casinos around exit 256 if your into that. Other than that its pretty much just str8 fwy unless you want to take some old country roads which I can recommend. You could also stop around Anarcortes or visit LaConner on the way into town. You could drive onto Whidbey Island and visit some wineries there, then take the ferry into everett. You could also stop in Everett and do the 747 tour at the boeing plant. Its only $5 and pretty interesting. It only runs on weekdays. Let me know what you like and I can help you.l

I would agree with Dave, if you have the time, cut off I-5 in Bellingham at Fairhaven/Chuckanut Drive and follow the waterline down to Skagit County, at the little store once you hit the flats, turn right and go through Bow/Edison. At Highway 20, turn west towards LaConnor/Anacortes. If you still have time to poke around, LaConnor is a great town, the LaConnor brewery has good food and homebrewed beer. That would be about 10 minutes (depending on how fast you drive) south of Hwy 20. Then return to Hwy 20 and follow it towards Whidbey Island (I love my town but if you are on a schedule, I would turn left before coming in) This will take you over Deception Pass, incredible spot to stop and take pictures. Then you can just keep going down Whidbey and take the ferry back over to Edmonds then head to Seattle.

If you don't have time for that, take the 405 cutt off from I-5 just north of Seattle and check out the St Michelle Winery in Woodenville.

great info. thanks. what can you tell me about the boeing tour. how far out of my way would it be? i will be going on a weekday, so it could be a possibility. will also have all day to do the drive, so not in any hurry.

if i took the route that i'd need to take a ferry back, is that something i'm need to schedule in advance? where do i find the times it leaves?

you don't need to make ferry reservations, they are part of our public transportation system out here, kinda like floating busses! Check out sailing times at www.wsdot.gov/ferries/scedules should at least get you close.

OK, aside from the fact that I misspelled it, leave the schedule part off the website and it will take you to the ferry's home page. You would be looking for the Clinton/Mukilteo ferry. I just checked it and they run about every 1/2 hour.

excellent. this will sound like a stupid question, but the ferry is for cars too, right? and how long will it take to get across?

Yes, it is a drive on ferry. Should take about 1/2 hour to cross.

the Boeing tour is 5 minutes off the freeway at everett. Its the Mukilteo exit. Hard to explain but easy to find. It does get booked up so it may take awhile to get on a tour.
