Going to Hawaii Big Island for honeymoon! Need help

We are thinking of staying in the Kona area. Is this a good choice. We will be renting a jeep and want to explore places like beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes etc.

Is Kona a good location for such a trip?

We are thinking of staying in a cottage instead of a resort depending on the pricing.

Kailua-Kona is the tourist center of the Big Island...but none of those things (beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes) are there. It's a 7 hour drive around the island to get to all of those things, so centering your trip in Kailua-Kona might set up you up for disappointment.

The best beaches are north of Kona in the Kohala area, especially around Waikoloa. (Also the most expensive accomodations, though also the nicest.) Waterfalls are located along the Hamakua coast towards Hilo, on the east side of the island. The volcano is located about a half-hour southwest of Hilo and 2.5 hours south and east of Kailua-Kona.

You might consider splitting up your time, staying a few days on the Kona side for shopping and beaches, and 2 or 3 days on the Hilo side for the volcano and the waterfalls.

Have you read any trip reports on this forum yet? How about travel guides? When are planning to be in Hawaii on your honeymoon? What types of things do you like to do besides "explore"? Do you like water sports, hike, lounge around the pool? Answer these questions and you'll get a lot more information.

Kona is a fun little touristy town...to visit. I wouldn't stay there.

Many people stay a night or two in Volcano to see the volcano and Hilo, but spend most of their time in one of the nicer, newer hotels and condos in the Waikoloa area to visit the beach, ranchlands, and "wet side". Neither Kona nor Hilo have very nice lodgings, and Hilo gets a lot of rain.

You really wouldn't need a jeep. That's a rough ride and you'll be hot and dusty -- and maybe not very safe. Touring Big Island means covering longer distances than on the other Hawaiian Islands. Locals favor enclosed vehicles with good A/C.

We also went there for our HM (we got engaged in Kona too!)...we stayed at the Kona Reef Resort--its a timeshare, but they have rentals as well--you have your own kitchen, so you can cook there (save $$!)...great views, and they have a pool and a grill you can use!

here's one cottage-like setting --

http://www.aaahtheviews.com/

for an active vacation where beachfront and resort doesn't matter, Waimea dry side is within reach of all these things, about an hour closer than Kona, as you can see if you check a map.

You might want a B&B or cottage in Hilo or Volcano or Puna to do the Volcano.
