Day pass option

We are visitng the big island in a couple of weeks (so excited) and are looking for advice.

On our last day in paradise, we have to check out of our timeshare at 10am and our flight isn't until 6pm. We were wondering if there is a hotel near the Kona airport that would allow us to rent a room for about five hours (11am until 4pm) or offers a day pass so that we can relax before our long flight back to the mainland and not have to worry about leaving our bags in the rental car.

We appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

This is a common problem, the best solution being to have the timeshare for an extra day (most people feel).

Hotels aren't in the habit of selling day rooms here, especially if you have not already been a guest there. But you can call around. There aren't that many hotels or motels in Kailua-Kona.

Courtyard, Royal Kona, Seaside.

I think you can check your bags five hours before your flight. You can also go to a nice resort where your belongings will be secure. Hualalai Four Seasons is right near the airport. Kona is 15 minutes south, Waikoloa Beach is about 30 minutes north.

Also, you can try to negotiate a late checkout or get your bags held somewhere secure by the timeshare office. You've probably already asked about the late checkout though.

Don't worry, it is not that long! Some people have 10 pm flights which is a lot worse.

Great advice... The Hilton in Waikoloa is a fun place to hang out for the day. They offer day passes from 10am-6pm for up to 4 people, which includes use of a room and access to the pools & water lagoon for $160+tax.

It would take about 50mins to drive from Kona, then 20mins back to the airport from the Hilton. Hope that helps- Aloha

Here is a link to an older thread that talks about what to do on the day of departure.

forgot, we go to the beach at the mauna kea, and then use the outside shower for a quick , clean up , before the plane. spending the day at that beach is wonderful.

Thanks for the additional information. If we choose to go to Mauna Kea would it be safe to leave our bags in the trunk?

well, i can only say that we do..you park in the parking lot by the golf shop..they have "day " passes for anyone for the beach. on a really busy day, you may have to wait for one, but i have always gotten one, on my 30 times to the big island. it's pretty well looked after, i would think. just have your things situated, so you don't have to get anything out of the trunk. lots of people have converts and leave the top down. the parking lot is for golf, as well.

we play all day on the beach that they have for the tourists (not staying there) and then shower with the outside shower and do all the necessary things in the beach bathrooms. no mirror in there!! really nice and free!!
