Hapuna and Kauna'oa beaches

I'll be on the Pride of America next month. Are there chair and umbrella rentals at these 2 beaches? How far are they from the pier? Thanks.

No chair or umbrella rentals. They're about an hour north.

Are there any other nice beaches up there that would have rentals? Thanks.

No, there are no beaches here with beach chair or umbrella rentals.

No, that is more Maui and Waikiki style.

People here bring their own little beach chairs and sit under palm or other trees if they want shade and lie on towels or those roll up mats. We're not fancy here.

The hotels are very possessive of their loungers and cabanas and you have to be a hotel guest to use them.

As was said, those beaches are about an hour's drive each way, and you most likely won't be allowed to go to Kauna'oa because the beach parking is usually full by 9 am.

However, you could plan to have lunch on the sand at the Mauna Kea restaurant and get to see the beach, walk it, and maybe swim if you are discreet about carrying in your beach bag.

If you split a lunch item and have a drink you can get by for about $25 apiece, more like $40 if you full on order lunch and have a cocktail.

Or you can go to Hapuna or Waialea beaches for free.

2 years ago on Chrismas, 2010, you could rent chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards at Hapuna Beach. They will ask for car keys and/or driver's license. The cost was $30 for 2 chairs and umbrella or 2 chairs and boogie board. Has that changed? There used to be a building by the parking lot where they used to sell hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, etc.

I think that concession was only open over the holiday, or is hit and miss, I haven't seen it there any time recently.

That concession wasn't there at Hapuna this past JUly. You can sit up on the grass under the trees at Hapuna to get some protection from continuous sun, and then walk right onto the beach when you want sun. But we always try to get there by eight am and leave by 12 when it gets busier. It also seems to get breezier in the aft. It really is a beautiful beach, and we swam with two turtles around the rock outcropping in the middle of the beach.

I am sorry to hear that! It was so nice, especially on Christmas, to have the concession open and be able to rent beach chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards. Shea could be right that they might open during the holidays because of all the tourists heading to the beach on Christmas.

How is the beach in front of the King Kamehameha hotel? I hear there is chair rental on their beach. Is it worth renting a car for the day to drive up the coast to the other beaches? Thanks again.

It's barely a beach. It's very small and overlooks the pier so you'll be looking at the fellow cruise ship hoardes. While the snorkeling isn't bad out on the point and in the middle of the bay, the boat traffic makes it hazardous, especially on cruise ship days.

Yes, it's worth renting a car and driving north.

While Kauna'oa, Waialea, and Hapuna are beautiful, I actually prefer the Kikaua Point and Kukio beach area closer to town, about 25 minutes drive north. Less people, lots of turtles, fish ponds, wetlands and bird watching, nice long walks, and the Four Seasons Beach Bar next door for lunch and cocktails.
