You can visit the Wild Loop Road any time during the day or evening and usually find some wildlife. The animals just seem to be more active during the early morning or late afternoon/dusk hours. 9 a.m. should still be okay, especially as you get into the fall hours. You will often find wildlife throughout Custer State Park and not just on the Wild Loop Road. I always suggest stopping at the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center, across from the State Game Lodge, and ask where the buffalo were last seen on the Loop Road. You can also ask a ranger. Quite often the buffalo move off the main loop road and can be found by taking some of the off-shoot gravel roads. Usually a ranger or park employee can help.

You can see wildlife just about any time in Custer SP, as Mt. Mama said. We have found the burros on Iron Mountain Rd. & the Wildlife Loop.

If you are not an early riser, which I can understand, you can check out the loop around dinner time. We have found quite a bit of activity at this time, plus it will get you back to your hotel or cabin before dark.

The wildlife isn't on a set schedule....while odds are better in the early morning or late evening hours, wildlife can and usually is visable all day long. You will most likely see SOME animals, but the earlier or later you go increases your odds for seeing NUMBERS of animals
