May in the Black Hills?

Our first trip to Custer/Black Hills was late September and it was dark skies the whole four days. Still, we enjoyed so many things in that region that we're planning to go back in Spring of 2011.

As seniors, we won't be doing hiking or camping. Photography is important to me and I am trying to find the best time for our trip when the landscape will be coming to life. We hope to cover the region in a one week trip.

Any suggestions as so how early in May we could expect to see color and have reasonably good weather? (We'll need to be back in our home state by the first week in June.)

Thanks for all input!

In May usually the later the better. It is not unusual for a blizzard to hit that first week and nip all the leaf buds so that trees may not leaf out until late May. The Ponderosa pines are always green of course.

There's just no way to predict May weather, it can also be wonderful. This year our last snow was in June, doesn't last long, but can make a mess out of the roads for a day or so.

Unfortunately May is very unpredictable as Lohrs said. June is the best month for colors and blooming IMO. The grass is that true green, flowers are all blooming but the Spring bulb flowers are still around, trees and bushes have bounced back from any heavy late spring snow. Birds are everywhere and we get plenty of moisture to keep things looking healthy. Weather is usually a mix of cooler rainy days and very bright sunny days. Typically July can be overwhelmingly hot and by August its still extremely hot and things are drying out and turning brown.

I agree June would be better. We were there in late May and the days were warm but the nights were cold. We did the night program at Mt. Rushmore and it was 32 degrees and very cold and windy. We bought coats, etc. but still was very cold sitting outside watching the program.

Thank you all for your essential feedback! Armed with your information, I have purchased airline tickets for the first week in June. Of all the places we've traveled to, this is the first time we will be going back a second time to the same place because there are enough new attractions to keep it interesting. Since our last trip was in September, June will offer a whole new perspective. Now, if the weather will just be kind!
