40th birthday in New Orleans or Vegas?

My wife and I and some friends are looking to travel to the US in October to play up for my 40th.

We are tossing up between New Orleans and Las vegas.

We just want to drink and stay up late, eat good food. Gambling is of little interest. Is October a particularly good time to be in either place? Help me please so I don't waste my money.

Both would be fun, entertaining options. Both cities have great food, lots of booze and facilitate staying up late. In fact, Vegas and New Orleans are the only two U.S. cities without "closing laws" for alcohol establishments.

Obviously, New Orleans is still in rebuilding mode in much of the city so consider this. The French Quarter and other heavily-visited parts of our city were not flooded and are not scarred as much as other parts, and I suspect even more progress will be made by October. Small businesses in New Orleans will appreciate your business, too!

Having said that, it's your call. Vegas is an experience in itself. I'm not a fan, to be honest, but many of my friends/family love it.

Let us know what you decide.

ps - October weather in NO is superb. I think Vegas is nice in October as well.

If gambling is not of interest and you want to stay up late, drink and eat good food, then it;s no contest - New Orleans!

By October, the weather is cooling down and huricane season is past.

I did LV for my bachelorette and I have done NOLA a few times. I prefer NOLA (I am turning 40 this year too). There is so much to see and do besides drinking and partying (although there is plenty of that as well - and you don't have to get all decked out to go out). In LV to get into the clubs you must spend a lot of $$ and really dress the part. Shows are very pricey too. NOLA is more relaxed as far as that goes -- jazz clubs, Bourbon Street, whatever - the only time there are dress codes are for Sunday brunch - and even that is a bit lax. So if you WANT to dress up all the time, and spend $100+ for a show per person, then LV. Otherwise I would go with NOLA - where the shows take place all day long, on the street corners and in little cafes and in Jackson Square....or fine venues as well.

Oh and th FOOD in NOLA....OMG the FOOD!!! Las Vegas, to me, the food was good but more standard. NOLA is special food-wise...

As it should be! :)

I love New Orleans and if you've never been you're in for a treat...the first visit was magical but despite many more stays The French Quater and New Orleans never loses it's appeal to me!

(Happy Birthday)

We just made the same decision last month - but in our case, we were trying to decide between Vegas and New Orleans for our 25th wedding anniversary trip. We ended up picking New Orleans - and we're really looking forward to our trip next month.

Dave86 and moonltnite, I think you have both made the best decision! Las Vegas is fun, but New Orleans has so much more to offer in my opinion - the history, architecture, food, music, etc. And if you want to gamble, Harrah's is right downtown and it is a beautiful casino, as pretty as any I've been to in Vegas. If you can come at Halloween, that is a very interesting time of year to be in New Orleans, lots of costumes and fun.

Even with New Orleans rebuilding there is no contest for me,.. New Orleans. My last visit to NO I met several people from Vegas. Even they said they preferred to party in New Orleans.

Vegas can be fun, but it is superficial glitz. NOLA is like a sultry, magical mistress, she mersmerizes and intrigues you. She consumes your heart and soul.
