Safe to walk to Bourbon Street from Comfort Inn and Suites

I am staying at the Comfort Inn and Suites at Baronne Street and Perdido Street soon. Just wondering, is it safe to walk from the hotel to the happenings on Bourbon Street in a group of about 5 on a Saturday night? Or should I take a short cab ride?

Yes...I stayed there last month and 2 of us walked to and from the Bourbon St. area 3 or 4 times...2 times late at night.

New Orleans has the highest murder rate in the country. Although most of those murders are isolated to gang and drug related crimes, random crime can happen almost anywhere and there are a lot of armed robberies in this city. Always use precaution. Personally, I wouldn't walk anywhere in this city that is not in the middle of the action. And you will be slightly off the beaten path. You could do that walk 20 times with no issues, but all it takes is once. My opinion - cab it. At least until you get to Canal Street.

I've lived here my entire life and wouldn't walk anywhere that is not in the middle of all the entertainment, stores, casinos, bars, etc.

"Safe" is, or course, a relative term, causing unending discussion on this Forum, because it's a RELATIVE term. I wouldn't anticipate any particular problem for a group of five (or 2 or more for that matter), particularly on a Saturday night. Some find the area on Bourbon St. between Bienville St. and Canal St., and the area around the intersection of Burgundy St. and Canal St., uncomfortable after around 11 PM, so late at night you might consider walking on St. Charles Ave./Royal St. between Perdido St. and Bienville St. Do keep in mind this is an urban area meriting customary precautions applicable to all US urban areas.

I agree with chercaruso. Listen to a local. I learned my lesson sitting in the campus police meeting when my son was a freshman 4 yrs ago. They didn't mince words, I would cab it from that area at night. Cab fare is cheap.

Ive made this exact walk many times before at all times of the night. And at 4 AM, (while I wouldnt describe it as busy), car and foot traffic are still pretty steady, ( there are a lot of people walking and cabbing it back to the hotel just like you) so it never feels like your completely removed people. Thats not to say that something couldnt happen or you shouldnt use caution but its not as if your walking a dark alley by yourself. With 5 people you should be ok. I would say, even if your stumbling around, make sure someone in the group is at least acting sober and alert... that may go without saying but, that is the smart way to make that walk.

if it's later in the evening, I'd cab back, especially if you've been drinking and look like good targets. I like in a large city and have for many years and I don't like walking around downtown areas past the big crowds.

I have done it but felt uncomfortable and second calling cabs to get back. Its dark and desolute outside the main areas.
