New Orleans mardi gras

Without realizing that mardi gras started in January and that the super bowl is in New Orleans this year we booked a cruise from Jan. 27 to Feb 3rd, 2013. We were planning on staying in New Orleans for three or four days before the cruise. Now we are wondering if we can get rooms that are not exorbitant in price or even if rooms will be advailable.

We like to sightsee and have never been to New Orleans, so should we now be trying to reschedule our trip?

If your cruise leaves on January 27, you won't be dealing with Super Bowl pricing. Demand may be high as news media, etc arrives but it won't be the BIG days of Feb 1-4.

"Mardi Gras Lite", the first of two weekends of large New Orleans Mardi Gras parades, has been moved up to January 25-27. The following weekend of February 1-3 is Super Bowl weekend. The last five days of Carnival, including and ending with Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras), and also including the second weekend of large Mardi Gras parades, is February 8-12.

Mardi Gras Lite (a term used by visitors not locals) is not anywhere near as intense as the last five days of Carnival ending with and including Fat Tuesday, either in terms of crowds or hotel cost. But it is a popular tourist weekend, causing some increase in cost and decrease in hotel availability. Whether the Carnival experience will enhance or detract from your experience would depend on your tastes and preferences. Some public transit is curtailed before, during and after the parades.

It's not to early to book; give it a try.
