Places to go and things to do during the day?

Hi,

I'm going to be staying in the French Quarter and am wondering about what we should do during the day... tours, sightseeing, etc.

I do know I'm interested in a ghost tour and want to see the cemetaries. Any recommendations for a good tour?

What else would you recommend for during the day?

Thanks!

When are you going, how long are you staying? VIP does a great city tour which includes a cemetery...but if you're only in for a short time, it will make a difference in what all of us might recommend...

Tours by Isabelle is a very reputable company. You can walk to St. Louis Cemetery just N of Rampart. You can take the St. Charles streetcar to the GD and tour the homes without a guide by walking but you would need a walking guide of the GD. Take a stroll on Magazine in the 2,500 to 5,500 block area and visit the neat shops and restaurants there. The zoo is at Audubon Park at Magazine. Vist the WWII DDay Museum in the WHD. Be sure to visit the clubs and bars in Marigny and on Frenchmen Street. Enjoy your trip.

We will be there for 4 nights and 5 days (an extended weekend) March 8-12.

Thank you.

Well, my favorite daytime activity is to get my hubby liquored up at with 3-for-1 drinks on Bourbon St. (Tropical Isle and Old Opry House usually have good bands) then take advantage of him by taking him shopping on Royal or the French Market! ;-)

A carriage tour is a great way to become familiar with the FQ. If you want to do a walking tour Bloody Mary's tours does a really nice job and has several different tour themes (I enjoyed the vice tour--brothels, gangsters, and duels!)

You can also ride the streetcar up through the Garden District--it's about 45 minutes round-trip if you just ride, or you can get out and explore along the way.

okay, kristy...you're making this complicated! LOL! On your other post, I assumed a long weekend meant 3 days..so now that I see you have a bit of time to sightsee...that changes things! summerbum gave some great suggestions! Take the first day to just explore the Quarter...walking, carriage ride (if inclined), shopping, eating, drinking. Bloody Mary also does a ghost/cemetery tour, I believe, so you could do that in one shot! Believe me, there is sooooooooooooooooooo much to get "sidetracked" with in NOLA, you'll soon find the schedule is full!

Also take a day to ride the St Charles streetcar through some truly beautiful areas of New Orleans. There are restaurants along the way where you can eat lunch. And you can do your own cemetery tour by taking the Canal Street streetcar to the end of the line. And take a ride on the Algiers ferry for a beautiful view of the Quarter! And all of these things are cheap or free!

Ohhh Summerbum, you just reminded me. We missed our usual drinks then jewelry binge in Cabo, so that sounds like a great plan (not necessarily jewelry, but local stuff!)

We are doing a 5 day, 4 night pre-cruise trip (and luckily get a day during the French Quarter Festival on our return). Doing a day in the Garden District, including lunch at Commanders Palace, then walk back via Magazine Street. An afternoon at City Park and NOMA, a lot of time in the French Quarter, evenings on Bourbon and Frenchmen's Street, a culinary bicycle tour and an airboat tour will keep us busy!

In addition to the tours that give an overview of different areas there are also tours that concentrate on certain groups of people as well as tours that explore various historical buildings in the French Quarter.

Monde Creole - visits courtyards, cemetery and tells the story of Laura Locoul, a woman who lived close to 100 years and was the matriarch of Laura Plantation. http://www.mondecreole.com/

Women of New Orleans, from Strange True Tours: There are some really fascinating women in New Orleans history! http://www.strangetruetours.com/#!women-of-nola-tour

Building/home tours include:

1850 House

Hermann Grima House

Gallier House

Beauregard Keyes House

Old U.S. Mint

The Arsenel

Old Ursuline Convent

The Cabildo

The Presbytere

Several listed here: crt.state.la.us/museum/admission.aspx#arsenal

And my often mentioned (by me) favorite The Pharmacy Museum: http://www.pharmacymuseum.org/
