If you want a suite hotel, you're going to be out on the edges of Madison and not near campus. The closest one is the Clarion near the Alliant Center.

Closer to campus also with a pool is The Double Tree, The Hyatt Place, The Hilton at Madison Monona Terrace, Best Western Plus Inn on the Park, and my favorite, the Concourse. This last one is advertising Jacuzzi suites, but these are on their pricier Governor's Level. You can walk to campus from these hotels. And they would give your prospective student a feel for the State Street campus area.

The new Hotel Red on regent St. has suites (pricey) but they are as close to campus as any hotel in Madison - walking distance near the Engineering campus. Alas, no pool. The Doubletree is also close to campus and has suites (with sofa bed), but their website indicates that they are currently doing 'renovations'. Be advised that all amenities may not be available. The other close-by hotel is the Dahlman Campus Inn - no pool and no three-bed suites but this is easily the closest hotel to campus - a 3 minute walk. Other large hotels such as the Hyatt, the Inn on the Park, the Concourse and the Hilton are near Capitol Square about 1 km (or slightly more) walk to campus. Tehy offer more amenities than Hotel Red or Campus Inn but they are further from campus. The Clarion is not walking distance. Note that it will not be spring-like in Madison in the coming week so even a 1 km walk will require winter coats.

thanks much, good choices! I think we'll go with the Hyatt, they have the best price surprisingly.
